ARCHICAD makes you feel safe

CG Jensen is one of Denmark’s medium sized entrepreneurs with roots back to the 1930s. They cover virtually all types of construction projects such as land/sewer, concrete , parking garages, steel work and residential / commercial.

ARCHICAD for design
They use ARCHICAD for design, which among other things includes the preparation of manufacturing drawings on large construction projects. Henrik Graversen is engineering and construction manager at CG Jensen and explains how BIM model gives him time to breathe when he works on major projects: “When we hoist a 120-ton steel bridge in place over a motorway it gives you a little more time to breathe when you can visualize the project in 3D and ensure that all solutions are correct before placing the bridge in real life.”

It is of course imperative that the BIM model is as realistic as possible with shuttering, reinforcement and steel structures – all of which are relatively complicated to model .

BIM means that one employee can make calculations, drawings and visualizations in a single operation, which also protects against errors that easily sneak into projects designed in 2D CAD. A “drawing” consists of 2D views , details , 3D slices and lots of text notes, which combined give a precise description of the work to be performed. In contrast to this so gathers BIM model all this information in a model that provides a quick overview and also assures the quality of project documents .

The example below illustrates the steel structures of the bridge endpieces on a major bridge project. The project was designed in ARCHICAD and subsequently imported into FEM design, in which a simulation is performed in order to design and verificate the steel load-bearing capacity.

“With a ” Coordinate Dimension “object you can keep the heat in the office while planning and designing, and then export data to our surveyor via the “Schemes”

Henrik Graversen, CG Jensen

Since data can be saved as Excel files it is possible for the landsurveyor to actually load the data directly into his total station.

Working with BIM quickly pays off. Driving plates that the scaffolding is based on is also tested in the FEM-design with a sentence calculation according to EC7 and used flat support in the form of ” Modulus of subgrade Reaction” to demonstrate VM-max- tension:

The calculation was approved by Ramboll’s department for geotechnics , and means that you can settle for a 14 mm plate rather than the 22 mm plate, which was the result of a “hand calculation”. Henrik Graversen speculates that this has saved kr . 100,000-200,000 in the rental / purchase of 22 mm steel plates !

BIMx is a great tool to get 2D drawings, 3D models , quantities and information on the site. The model shared from ARCHICAD and a link sent via email. – Here it is easy to access the whole project !
